Some job listings are insulting.... They ask for experience, responsibility, sometimes managing people, handling customers, solving problems and then.... offer pay that’s barely above minimum wage. Are we supposed to laugh or cry?! Employers are counting on desperation, hoping someone will say yes because they have no choice. When did this become normal and why are we expected to just accept it?

It's crazy how many 'entry level' jobs need a few years experience, or where it feels like they've combined 2-3 jobs into one. I think the only thing we can do is call them out on it. Obviously do it in a professional way, but I think if you say this looks 'x role + y role' and here's the reasons that may not work it at least show you've got expertise and know the industry really well.

Some jobs have experience or requirement lists that feel like they're intended for someone 3 steps above the role...

yeahh that's a trick that employers, businesses companies and franchises use to save and gain money while over working employees. instead of hiring multiple individuals that are specifically qualified for each role, they use eager applicants and add duties to their role just to get the most out of an employee while giving them as little as they can, that could change if all employees learnt that without them the business/ productivity world goes stagnant, that's why they made work bots n machine

Unfair expectations are the actual worst Owen. Maybe they get away with it when the market's tough...But when they're struggling to find ppl, it comes back to bite them. 😞

Sometimes their offer might just be a low ball. I make sure to tell them how much I'm looking for based on "the market" and what other people pay. Some of them really are wild

I know. I’ve thought the same. One job I reported. Said they couldn’t do anything about it though. It was a zero hours contract. Minimum wage. On call for 12-16 hours every single night, 3 weeks on, 1 week off. Guaranteed minimum pay of 2 hours normal pay per weeknight. It’s impossible to plan a life outside a job like that. Remote but you had to be available for the entire 12-16 hours. That’s over 100 hours on call every week apart from your week off. Worst I saw “high application volume”.

I think time NZ appoints a recruitment commissioner just like the grocery commissioner to regulate fair recruitment and help NZ citizens secure jobs based on merits rather than recruitment favoured on prejudices.
