Is it worth applying to job ads that have been up for several days? I see some jobs posted for up to a month - does that mean they haven't had enough suitable applications or do they just leave a job up for a set amount of time? I don't want to apply if there's no chance my resume will be seen. Obviously the best time to apply is straight away, but is it still worth applying to a week old job posting in your experience?

Can't hurt throwing your hat in the ring. If the ads still up think you probs have to assume they're still looking.

I’ve found quite often companies will stick with their closing date if it is specified on the job ad. I’d still apply for a job if it’s been open for a week, you never know.

I have rarely, if ever, heard back from a job posting that's been up for a long time. If you've got the time it doesn't hurt, but for me the best results have come only when I apply for recent postings!

Some places don't even start reviewing CVs until the ad has finished being run.

Apply for everything. if its been up for a while there could be a number of reasons, my advice is think positive, chances are they just haven't found a suitable applicant yet. GOOD LUCK!
