What do you do to look busy at work when you’re not really? My role is either in feast or famine mode, it comes in waves, I’m often waiting for other people and have ‘nothing’ to do. But that might look bad from a manager’s perspective, so I always try to look busy. What are some ‘busy work’ things I can do in my downtime?

Depends on the expectations. I've discussed this stuff with management before, along with the whole "busy work" thing where you just have to do stuff for the sake of it. Decent employers will treat the slow times as a chance to recharge after being run off your feet - and it all balances out.
