What's it like to be a Production Operator?
Production Operators process and package products on a production line. They set up and operate equipment, assemble components and check finished products for quality. Depending on their industry, Production Operators may be required to operate heavy equipment and have a good level of physical fitness. They often work shifts including nights and weekends.
Tasks and duties
- Setting up equipment and operating production machinery as required by supervisors while complying with company policies and OH&S standards.
- Assisting with production line set up and breakdown repairs, in addition to reporting potential process improvements.
- Undertaking regular inspections and maintenance of equipment to ensure production capacity and quality is consistently achieved.
How to become a Production Operator
You can become a Production Operator without qualifications. On-the-job training is usually provided. A forklift licence may be required by some employers.

Get experience in an entry-level role in a manufacturing industry such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, mining and metals, wood and paper or transport and logistics.

You may be required to get a forklift licence, which can be attained by completing a short course.

With experience, you could progress into a supervisor role or become a Production Manager.
