What's it like to be a Machine Operator?
Machine Operators run the machinery used in factories for manufacturing. A wide range of industries need Machine Operators, from food production to pharmaceuticals and paper. Experienced Machine Operators may be required to fix technical problems when they arise, or to troubleshoot and identify problems for specialists to repair. Some machines are operated by hand, while others are operated by computer. Machine Operators usually work in factory environments and work shifts according to their company’s needs.
Tasks and duties
- Operating machinery and power tools.
- Reading job and machinery specifications to understand operation requirements.
- Manually loading materials into machinery.
- Working safely and accurately in a production line.
- Checking output for quality.
- Maintaining equipment and repairing when necessary.
How to become a Machine Operator
You don’t need any particular training or qualifications to become a Machine Operator, and instructions are sometimes provided on the job.

Choose an industry you’d like to work in. While Machine Operators can potentially move between jobs in different manufacturing industries, it’s helpful to understand the health and safety requirements of specific industries and to be comfortable working in certain environments that may be hot, cold or noisy.

Consider getting a forklift licence if required by your employer, or to boost your employability. You can complete an approved forklift course through the AA or an independent trainer in your area, and get an F Endorsement on your driver’s license.
