What's it like to be an Office Manager?
An Office Manager (Kaiwhakahaere Tari) ensures administrative and clerical tasks are completed in an office. They implement budgets, delegate tasks, assist in the hiring and training of staff and maintain records of staffing, accounting and workplace processes. Office Managers need some knowledge of human resources (HR) and good administrative and organisational skills. They work for schools, law and accountancy firms, hospitals, councils and community organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring appropriate budgets, staff and training are in place so the organisation runs smoothly.
- Hiring, training and supervising clerical and administrative support staff.
- Developing and managing the records, accounts and systems of an organisation.
How to become an Office Manager
You can become an Office Manager without qualifications, but a mix of experience and training may be preferred by some employers.

Complete a qualification, such as a New Zealand Certificate in Business (Administration and Technology) (Level 4).

Get experience in an entry-level administrative role in an industry of your choice. You could start as an Administration Officer.
- 3.
Alternatively, consider completing a bachelor degree majoring in business, commerce or a related field. This usually takes three years of full-time study and may provide broader career options.
