What's it like to be a Kitchenhand?
A Kitchenhand (Ringawera) often assist in restaurants, hotels and other food service industries. Their responsibilities involve maintaining cleanliness and order in the kitchen, which can include washing utensils and dishes and cleaning workspaces for chefs and cooks. They may also assist in basic food prep tasks, such as peeling potatoes or chopping vegetables. Given the fast-paced nature of the role, Kitchenhands are usually required to have good physical stamina. With most establishments serving food around the clock, Kitchenhands may need to be flexible with working hours, which can include weekends, evenings and public holidays.
Tasks and duties
- Performing food preparation tasks such as peeling, chopping and slicing ingredients.
- Cleaning kitchen appliances and equipment, ensuring they meet hygiene standards.
- Assisting chefs and kitchen staff with various tasks as needed, including preparing and serving meals.
- Unloading food and equipment deliveries and arranging storage.
- Removing and recycling waste from a kitchen.
- Maintaining health and safety regulations in a kitchen.
- Operating dishwashers and washing pots, pans and utensils.
