What's it like to be a Cleaner?
A Cleaner (Kaihoroi Whare) ensures properties are clean and tidy. Their tasks include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting and polishing. They work in many settings including private residences, offices, schools and hospitals. Cleaners may work for a company or run their own business. They often work on a part-time or casual basis and may be required to work shifts including weekends or nights.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring a particular area is clean by sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, deodorising, dusting, polishing and tidying.
- Emptying waste from bins, ashtrays and waste containers, cleaning receptacles and replacing with clean ones.
- Taking responsibility for security of the area you work in by ensuring the building is safely locked and secured at the end of your shift.
How to become a Cleaner
You can become a Cleaner without qualifications. Some employers may require you to complete background checks.

Get experience and on-the-job training from an employer. Alternatively, a New Zealand Certificate in Cleaning (Level 2) may help to formalise your knowledge.

With experience, you could progress into a supervisor role or start your own business. Licenses and registrations may be required to own a cleaning business. A relevant qualification such as a New Zealand Certificate in Business (Introduction to Small Business) (Level 3) may also be helpful.
