What's it like to be an Area Manager?
An Area Manager is a senior role that is usually responsible for overseeing the operations of multiple company locations or regions. This role includes managing and leading a team of Store Managers, setting realistic business objectives for each location, ensuring company policies and procedures are adhered to, and often involves dealing with complex customer complaints or issues. Area Managers work across a variety of industries, including retail, hospitality and banking. Their effectiveness is regularly assessed on the basis of the success and profitability of the areas they manage. Being an Area Manager might require significant travel or relocation, depending on the size and geographical dispersal of the areas being managed.
Tasks and duties
- Developing and implementing strategic plans for regions within a company's operational area.
- Overseeing multiple store locations to meet sales goals and company standards.
- Coordinating with other area managers and senior management to share information and formulate policies.
- Identifying areas of improvement and enforcing quality control standards across regions.
- Mentoring and guiding store managers, resolving operational issues and adhering to company protocols.
- Analysing performance data to understand sales trends and to identify opportunities for business growth.
- Regularly visiting stores under their management to assess operational efficiency and staff performance.
