What’s it like working at Specsavers?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees value their supportive colleagues and team members, along with benefits such as free glasses and birthday leave. The comprehensive training helps develop transferable optical and retail skills, whilst work/life balance is generally good with flexibility around personal commitments. There are also opportunities for career growth through internal programmes.

However, management practices vary between stores, with some employees experiencing challenges around support and communication. The role involves a high workload with demanding KPIs and multiple responsibilities, and the work can be repetitive and mentally demanding. Some stores experience cliquey dynamics and concerns about store facilities have been noted.

    A very unpleasant 3 years.
The good thingsFree glasses once a year for family and friends. Some of the social functions were okay although cultish. Free parking on site in Port Melbourne. Discount at local coffee shops. Some very nice and competent (but complaint) peers. Er...I think that's it.
The challengesThis could go on for a very long time...I'll try to be brief. Only way to improve it is to rebuild it. Specsavers is a 'family owned' business which is basically code for 'we don't need proper to follow proper procedure'. What that means is no strategy or planning. A culture of patronage and playing favourites. Opaque decision making, staff set up to fail. Star chamber judgement. Overall, a self-serving management culture that says one thing but does another. Treat any job advertisement sceptically, the Port Melbourne office is just a 'keep the lights on operation', no significant enterprise level work. It's a source of cash for long term incumbents. All of the real power is in the UK head office and they don't give a toss what goes on in Australia so long as the cash keeps flowing.

I do NOT recommend working here!!
The good things2 free pairs of glasses, and birthday leave. Some of the coworkers, that have become family to me.
The challengesI worked for Specsavers just shy of 2 years (recently quit), and the overall toxicity of management is a dreadful experience I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. In the time I worked there I had 2 sets of store partners (people who owned my store) and they were both dreadful to work for. The main thing they both had in common was that they treated their staff unfairly, and disregarded your feelings. They treated you like a number instead of a person, constantly telling you that they were there to support you, and yet at every turn they were never there when needed. I experienced blatant favouritism, hypocrisy, and downright disrespect. The small amount of benefits you receive, do not outweigh the cost it takes to your mental health working for such toxic people. Whilst I met some truly amazing people here, the upper team of management (minus a couple) were toxic and horrid to work for.
