Don't get a science degree to work as a technician.
The good thingsThe engine room of this company was the people. They do a pretty good job of hiring great people, at least at the technician level. The opportunities for movement within the company is relatively good. The lab and facilities are very top of the line and well maintained. On the job training is very good too, with the exceptional case of either a bad trainer or a trainer that has too much put on them (i.e. pulled in many directions) at the expense of their ability to really deliver good training.
The challengesThey need to pay the technicians a lot better. The L&D framework plateaus very quickly and creates an almost glass ceiling. Technicians are fighting for cents each year in terms of pay rise. Very clear biases and favoritism in terms of promotions/opportunities.

A Cautionary Perspective from a Former Employee I worked at Hill Laboratories during a time of significant internal change. The business has many strengths, not least the number of thoughtful, skilled professionals who are committed to doing the right thing and delivering real value. There is genuine goodwill in many areas of the organisation. However, in my experience, there is also a disconnect between the values the company promotes and the behaviours consistently demonstrated at senior executive levels. Key functions often appeared to operate independently, with departmental agendas at times working at cross purposes to broader organisational goals. While I attempted to raise concerns respectfully and in good faith — both informally and through internal channels — the outcomes were mixed. I want to acknowledge I had confidence in the integrity of the HR team, and trusted any investigation processes would have been undertaken with fairness and professionalism. Unfortunately, my experience also left me with the impression the executive team, or some within it, lacked a willingness to fully engage with underlying issues or commit to meaningful change. That said, this is not a business without potential. The right person, going in with eyes open, clarity of purpose, and organisational backing, could well be a catalyst for the cultural improvement needed. There are many good people within the organisation who deserve that. I did not pursue any grievance, and this review is not written with bitterness. My aim is simply to provide a candid and professional reflection for others considering roles with the organisation. The challenges are real — but so is the opportunity, if the culture is willing to evolve. Maybe you could be part of the change for the better?
