The challengesThe biggest challenge during my time at Goodwill Projects was the toxic and unsustainable workplace culture. Staff were regularly expected to work far beyond contracted hours without overtime or genuine consideration for work-life balance, and support from management was minimal. Leadership was highly top-down, with little openness to feedback, and accountability was often avoided by shifting blame onto staff. Employee wellbeing did not feel like a priority, with personal or health concerns sometimes handled without empathy or professionalism. High turnover was common, and it became clear through conversations with former employees that these issues were ongoing rather than isolated experiences. While many team members themselves were supportive and hardworking, the overall environment felt emotionally draining and difficult to sustain long term.
