What’s it like working at Beacon Lighting?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees value the supportive team environment at store level, with helpful colleagues and a variety of work that keeps each day interesting. Training opportunities through online modules and the Bright Start programme support development, whilst employee benefits such as discounts and flexible working arrangements are appreciated. Some employees also note career development opportunities within the company.

However, there are some potential challenges, including management that can be disconnected from store operations, understaffing leading to increased workload and overtime expectations, and compensation that some feel does not reflect their contributions. The competitive culture and extensive product knowledge requirements can also present difficulties, whilst work-life balance may be challenging in management roles.

    Would not work there again
The good thingsThe store was close to my home
The challengesI was hired as an Assistant Manager but was rarely allowed to perform managerial duties. A Manager in Training was placed above me and given my responsibilities, while I was assigned basic tasks such as restocking. I was accused of being late despite usually arriving five minutes before my 9:00 am start. The company expected staff to arrive 15 minutes early unpaid. I was also pressured to transfer to a store 45–60 minutes from home, although my store was only 10 minutes away. After declining, the treatment worsened. The manager never raised concerns directly, instead escalating minor issues and having a casual employee report on me. The warehouse and procedures were disorganised, leaving staff dependent on the manager. I was called into a surprise meeting and dismissed over arriving at 9:01 once and a $70 return incident that occurred while understaffed. I felt undermined, unfairly scrutinised and never given a genuine opportunity to succeed.

Honestly this company couldn’t organise a cold beer at the pub
The good thingsGoing home at the end of the day
The challengesCooperate management would rather hire kids with no experience & pay them peanuts rather than actually hire a skilled professional with experience in the field. No idea about electrical regulations, electrical certificates or anything trade related. Would get questioned on every purchase, even consumables like electrical tape and connectors. More concerned with saving money and protecting the brand image than customer satisfaction and quality instals. Then after 6 months of employment Beacon decided to terminate every single electrician they employed. I was working In WA at the time (living in Melbourne) and I was fired over the phone with 1 weeks notice. Other members with over 15+ years experience were shown the same respect. I’ve since learned this is a strategy they’ve made before. When things get hard fire the skilled staff who keep the company turning while the fat wigs at the top keep their big fat pay check. Honestly this company couldn’t organise a cold beer at the pub.

Not many worse ways to spend your time
The good thingsThe in store team environment; everyone got along with everyone and it could be rather relaxed at times
The challengesEveryone in a position above store manager needs to be fired and replaced as the culture that they have cultivated in the higher ranks is one of power and control. Some of the most truly vile people I have ever met. And even if they were nice about it, the policies and procedures that they put in place shows how big the disconnect between the corporate offices and the stores really is, as within my year+ there not a single change was made to benefit us, just harder to achieve bonuses and higher monthly expectations as a reward for good performance, with all actually promised rewards forgotten about and never given out.
