Toxic team environment where workplace dynamics overshadowed expertise and design quality.
The good thingsThe main benefit was the opportunity to gain experience working on high-profile projects. Beyond that, my experience was disappointing.
The challengesI found the working environment challenging, with team dynamics and social relationships appearing to carry more weight than professional expertise, constructive collaboration, and design quality. I did not feel that technical knowledge and relevant industry experience were consistently valued. The team culture did not provide the supportive and collaborative environment I expected, and the experience left me disappointed in the workplace culture and opportunities for professional development.

    Reasonable Large Architectural Practice
The good things-Computers/laptops -Office location and fitout -EOT facilities -Flexible working culture -My team is great, nice people and easy to work with.
The challenges-Management is opaque, and you are a small cog in the machine -unless you have someone senior who fights for you, you will get overlooked. -Little pathway for promotion internally -Can be unpleasant if you're on a bad project or team -Very big and corporate, which is not for everyone

    Toxic culture & top-heavy management
The good thingsOffice amenities & decent coffee machine
The challengesTop-heavy management with noticeable ego at senior levels. Communication from leadership can feel condescending and there’s a tendency for staff to be spoken about rather than supported directly. Clear favouritism from management impacts resourcing which was also disorganised at times. There’s a strong internal hierarchy between studios with Sydney clearly positioned as the dominant office. This creates an environment where other studios can feel undervalued and there’s an unspoken pressure to align with or appease Sydney leadership. Workloads are high and long hours are the norm, but recognition & appreciation is limited. There is little regard for staff wellbeing when it comes to late nights, unreasonable workloads and tight deadlines, including lack of basic support like transport unless pre-approved. Wellbeing initiatives feel superficial at best i.e posting an ‘R U OK?’ sign doesn’t compensate for a lack of genuine support.
Talent Acquisition LeadThank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're pleased to hear you appreciated the office environment and facilities. We're disappointed to learn that aspects of leadership, communication, workload management, and workplace culture did not meet your expectations. We are committed to creating a workplace where people feel respected, supported, and recognised for their contributions. We appreciate your honest feedback, as it helps us identify opportunities to improve the employee experience across our teams and studios. We wish you all the best for the future.
