What's it like to be a Kitchen Assistant?
Kitchen Assistants assist Cooks and Chefs in commercial kitchens. They prepare, store and restock ingredients, heat food items, wash dishes, clean work surfaces and equipment, and follow food safety and hygiene protocols. Kitchen Assistants may need to stand up for long periods during shifts, which may include nights and weekends. They work in restaurants, hotels, pubs, schools, aged care facilities and other residential and hospitality facilities.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting kitchen staff with food preparation, being sure to follow infection control and safe food handling regulations and procedures.
- Ensuring the kitchen is clean and tidy.
- Washing, stacking and drying dishes and utensils, and ensuring bench tops are clean and sanitary.
- Operating kitchen equipment in-line with instructions.
- Ensuring food items or dishes and utensils are ready for use as required.
How to become a Kitchen Assistant
You can become a Kitchen Assistant without qualifications. Some employers such as schools may require you to complete background checks.

Get experience and on-the-job training in a kitchen working under the supervision of experienced Cooks and Chefs.

Consider completing a qualification to enhance your career options, such as a New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4). This is a full-time, hands-on learning programme that prepares you for a career as a professional Chef.
