Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the team 

The Communication and Ministerial Services team lead the development and implementation of high quality communication, media and behaviour change services. We are also responsible for managing Official Information Act requests and have the Privacy Officer as part of our team. We work across the organisation, helping to tell the story of Maritime New Zealand internally and externally. We provide advice and expertise that supports the organisation and the wider maritime sector.

 

Te tūnga | The role 

If you are looking to grow your communications career in a supportive and encouraging environment then this could be the role for you. You will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of interesting and rewarding work. You will become part of a team that develops internal and strategic communications to support the organisation’s needs, engages with the maritime sector, and coordinates and manages media issues and responses.

This is interesting and important work, collaborating with a wide range of agencies from both the Government and non-government sector. This includes liaison on recreational and commercial maritime safety campaigns, coordination of media and communications around search and rescue and maritime incident responses, as well as other initiatives, such as workplace health and safety campaigns.

The position includes being part of an on-call roster for media queries and maritime response events.

Nōu te rourou | What you bring

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or 1-3 years’ experience in PR/journalism
  • A sound knowledge of media tools and channels, including social media
  • Experience working with AI
  • Experience working in a communication and media role preferably in a public sector organization
  • Strong analytical abilities, including sound judgement and robust decision-making skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including report writing
  • Strong relationship-building and collaborative skills
  • Ability to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, always being mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and having regard to Te Ao Māori and Treaty of Waitangi principles
  • Eager to learn and develop under the support of experienced communications professionals
  • Provide sound communications advice in a consultative way, while dealing with ambiguity, tight deadlines and changing priorities
  • Ability to network effectively in a consultative and collaborative manner with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to travel within New Zealand with short notice

Salary range $86,355 to $105,284 depending on skills and experience + superannuation.
