Trainee Faultsperson

About the Role

We are seeking a diligent and dedicated Trainee Faultsperson to join our Fault response team, reporting to the Control Room Manager and part of the wider Network team. This entry-level position is designed for individuals looking to develop their skills and knowledge in the field of fault response while working under the supervision of experienced professionals. As a Trainee Faultsperson, you will engage in 2 - 3 years of study, working towards the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Supply (Line Mechanic Distribution) Level 4, which includes a combination of on-the-job training and ‘block’ courses away from home.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines.
  • Learning to operate various tools and equipment safely, including aerial lifts and power tools.
  • Participating in routine inspections of electrical infrastructure to identify potential issues.
  • Supporting senior line mechanics and fault response team in troubleshooting electrical faults and performing necessary repairs.
  • Learning from the fault response team to support safe work around overhead and underground power lines by contractors and consumers.
  • Adhering to safety protocols and regulations to ensure personal safety and the safety of others on site.
  • Gaining familiarity with technical documentation, including schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Engaging in training sessions to develop technical skills related to electricity distribution systems.
  • Participating in an on-call roster system to respond to faults or urgent operational issues.

 

About You

To excel in this role, you should demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Completion or current enrolment in a relevant pre-apprenticeship course (preferred)
  • NCEA Level 2 or higher
  • A commitment to complete 2 to 3 years of training, which includes a blend of on-the-job experience and theoretical ‘block’ courses
  • A basic understanding of electrical systems and components
  • Physical fitness and enjoyment of outdoor work
  • Comfortable with working at heights
  • An aptitude for practical tasks and problem-solving
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
  • Proven reliability, punctuality, and a willingness to learn
  • Commitment to excellence in customer service
  • A minimum requirement of a restricted driver's licence, with a readiness to obtain additional licences as necessary

The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and criminal record check.
