Library and Information Resource Manager

This role is part-time, term-time only (15 hours per week - Tuesday, Thursday and Friday)

Pay is in accordance with the Support Staff Collective -Librarian and library assistant pay rates – Grade C

Position Purpose/Objectives

  • To take overall responsibility for management of the College’s Library and Information Resource Centre (LIRC).

  • To manage the library resources, including printed and electronic book stock, reference material, subscriptions, services, staff, policy, and procedures.


Responsibilities and Duties

MANAGEMENT OF THE LIBRARY & INFORMATION RESOUCE CENTRE (LIRC)

  • Assist and advise the Principal and Executive Officer with appointment of LIRC contractors

  • Manage LIRC staff with appropriate delegations.

  • Carry out annual performance reviews and plan professional development for each member of LIRC staff, filing copies of annual reviews with the Executive Officer.

  • Maintain contact with external agencies, such as the National Library of New Zealand, school library network, and undertake necessary professional development to remain up to date with requirements of ICT and library management.

  • Facilitate Library visits for English, Intermediate and other relevant classes.

  • Maintain high quality book stock relevant for readers from Years 7 to 13.

  • Monitor borrowing patterns.

  • Provide magazines and other resources in response to student need.

  • Create interest in the library through student events and promotions.

  • Teach library and Information Literacy skills to library users and College staff.

  • Collaborate with teaching staff to maximise use of the LIRC in all subject areas.

  • Support staff and students with their use of Internet based resources.

  • Foster development of ICT literacy through support and individual assistance for staff and students.

  • Collaborate on literacy initiatives.

  • Contribute to planning and monitoring annual budget for the library.  Ensure the timely processing of invoices and passing of them to the Finance team or system.

  • Remain vigilant for potential improvements to Library furnishing and infrastructure, putting forward proposals where relevant changes are identified.


MANAGE LIBRARY PRINT RESOURCES: BOOK STOCK, REFERENCE MATERIAL, POLICY, AND PROCEDURES

  • Provide relevant quality resources, including online, to meet the reading and information needs of staff and students. 

  • Encourage all users to contribute to collection development.

  • Maintain a balanced collection of books, eBooks, databases, and printed material to meet user needs. 

  • Maintain an efficient borrowing system to track use and recovery. 

  • Communication with staff and students about resource requirements: 

  • Survey users from time to time about satisfaction with the library environment, resources, and practices

  • Analysis of use of various equipment.

  • Analysis of borrower data.

  • Maintain a buying plan for books, eBooks, online resources, and printed materials. 

  • Provide an annual report on LIRC and IT activities and trends for the AP-Pastoral to include in their report to the Board of Trustees.


ADDITIONAL AREAS OF WORK - STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & SUPPORT

  • Support groups that want to meet in the library to find and book suitable spaces and equipment eg: Teacher committees, Ako groups, Service groups, Parent Interviews, Sisters of Mercy retreats etc.

  • Lead a program of teaching Library skills and giving book recommendations during class visits.

  • Teaching research skills and Citation/Referencing to classes doing projects.

  • If Contrast technicians are busy or unavailable, helping to support the IT troubleshooting needs of staff and students (eg printing, document design) and solving simple issues like Wi-Fi, and charging.

  • Forming and training a team for the Year9 Readers Cup and similar literary events, supporting them to compete at regional contests.

  • Run highly engaging events in the library such as “Book Week” and “Lit Quiz”.

  • Support the training and management of the student librarians’ team, working closely with the Head Librarian


ADDITIONAL AREAS OF WORK – SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND EVENTS

  • Supporting school-wide literacy initiatives eg Silent Reading (with ‘free library’ book swaps)

  • Signage:  operating the vinyl cutter to create school signage and training staff and students in how to use it effectively.

  • Copyright support – liaising with staff over Copyright issues and assisting with school compliance as required.  Librarians often have a detailed knowledge of copyright regulations and can act as a touchpoint for queries from teachers and students, possibly creating guides to help with staying compliant.


RELATIONSHIPS

  • Functional relationships with all teaching and support staff.

  • Sustaining a good reciprocal working relationship with SLANZA, the National Library and other school and public libraries in the region.

  • Library and ICT Vendors
