About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Account Manager to drive profitable growth for our Hawkes Bay region, based in our Napier branch. You’ll manage a portfolio of key accounts, primarily in building merchants, plumbing, electrical, construction, infrastructure, and related sectors.

This is a field-based sales role focused on promoting our extensive range of steel products from roofing, structural steel, piping, fastenings, and fencing to specialised solutions, while delivering exceptional customer service and embodying our ‘One Company’ approach.

You’ll work closely with the Sales Manager, sales and customer service teams, and national support to broaden our customer base, increase product penetration per account, and identify new opportunities. The role offers a strong work-life balance with a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule and no extended travel required, allowing you to focus on building deep, trust-based relationships in the Hawke’s Bay region.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage and grow assigned accounts through regular, effective call cycles, lead follow-up, and solution selling to exceed sales and profitability targets.
  • Foster superior customer relationships by understanding client challenges, overcoming barriers to growth, addressing concerns promptly, and delivering ‘right product, right place, right time’ service for true customer delight.
  • Develop and implement strategies for local key accounts, collaborating with regional and national teams to exploit market opportunities and support long-term goals.
  • Maintain broad product knowledge across Steel & Tube’s full range, while leveraging technical experts as needed to provide tailored, value-added solutions.
  • Contribute to market intelligence by monitoring competitors, industry trends, and customer environments to inform growth plans.
  • Support operational excellence, continuous improvement, and strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards to protect people, assets, and the business.
  • Manage credit processes effectively and ensure all activities align with our core values: United, Open, Trusted, Integrity, and Accountable.

 

About You

You’re an experienced Account Manager from the steel industry or similar trade sectors (building merchants, plumbing, electrical, or related fields), with a proven track record of hitting sales targets, retaining and expanding customer accounts, and driving profitable growth. As a self-starter, you thrive on building deep, enduring relationships through excellent communication, proactive problem-solving, and structured call planning. You’re commercially aware, with strong influencing skills, logical thinking, and a genuine commitment to customer success, safety, and integrity.
