Mahi Law is seeking an experienced Employment Advocate to join our team on a Contract for Services / Fee-for-Service basis. This is a fully remote, flexible role suited to a practitioner who wishes to operate independently while working alongside a busy employee-focused employment advocacy practice.
Our firm represents employees across New Zealand in a wide range of employment matters including unjustified dismissal, unjustified disadvantage, constructive dismissal, workplace bullying and harassment, disciplinary processes, restructuring, and mediation advocacy.
This opportunity would suit someone who is confident running employment matters from initial advice through to MBIE mediation and resolution negotiations.
About the Role
This is a contractor position, not employment. The successful candidate will operate as an independent advocate and be paid on a fee-for-service basis per matter.
Work will primarily be conducted virtually, with most client interactions occurring via video, phone, and email.
Responsibilities may include:
Advising employees on employment rights and personal grievance claims
Preparing and progressing matters involving unjustified dismissal and unjustified disadvantage
Drafting correspondence to employers and representatives
Assisting clients with disciplinary meetings, performance processes, and restructuring consultations
Representing clients at MBIE mediation
Negotiating settlement agreements and exit arrangements
Providing practical guidance where bullying, harassment, or workplace disputes arise
About You
We are looking for someone who:
Has experience in New Zealand employment advocacy or employment law
Is confident handling personal grievance matters
Has strong written advocacy and negotiation skills
Is comfortable working independently in a remote environment
Is organised and able to manage multiple matters
Has experience attending MBIE mediation (preferred)
Holds an LLB, HR, or relevant employment relations experience (advantageous but not essential)
