We are seeking a qualified Engineer for a temp-to-permanent opportunity. Our client is a successful family business based in Hornby, Christchurch. They specialize in scrap metal, specialty metals and export these overseas. They have a large presence around Canterbury and are very involved in the industry. This role is responsible for executing engineering tasks as directed by the Operations Manager and managing the day-to-day maintenance and repair of plant and equipment.

 
 
 
Key Responsibilities Plant & Equipment Maintenance
  • Preventative and scheduled maintenance
  • Early fault detection and correction
  • Coordinate servicing (internal and external providers)
  • Daily/weekly plant checks
  • Supervise and enforce daily maintenance requirements (e.g. greasing)
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records
  • Order and collect parts as required
Repairs
  • Diagnose and repair plant and machinery faults
  • Coordinate major repairs internally or externally
  • Welding repairs as required
  • Minor vehicle/truck repairs
  • Monitor and action non-urgent fault reports
  • Maintain repair documentation
  • Oversee external repair contractors
Leadership & Communication
  • Lead by example and support yard staff
  • Provide clear instructions and practical engineering solutions
  • Liaise regularly with the Operations Manager regarding plant status, budgets and project planning
  • Report operational risks or developing issues early
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute positively
Compliance & Safety
  • Follow all workplace procedures and H&S requirements
  • Maintain current qualifications (e.g. welding tickets)
  • Complete compliance documentation accurately and on time
  • Maintain a strong health and safety focus at all times
About You
  • Recognised engineering qualification
  • Proven experience in plant and equipment maintenance
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Able to manage multiple priorities
  • High attention to detail
  • Honest, reliable and proactive
  • Positive communicator and team player
  • Full working rights in New Zealand
 
 Hours are 44.5 per week  (7.30 -5.00) with OT available
