Cook/chef

Position Title: Cook/Chef.

Department: Kitchen.

Locatio: Whangarei.

Hours: Casual.

Accountable to Clinical/Facility Managers.


Purpose

To manage catering services according to current best practice whilst meeting all legislative requirements associated with the preparation, storage, and food service. To prepare meals that are presentable, nutritious, and tasty. To cater for every individual dietary profile. 


Competencies

Service delivery

  • Prepares meals in line with individual dietary profiles.

  • Contributes to and enhances facility reputation by providing consistently high standard of food preparation and presentation. 

  • Competently operates within New Zealand legislation and guidelines related to the provision of catering services and health and safety in employment.

  • Demonstrates innovation in service delivery. 

  • Caters and plans for special occasions according to activity plan including birthdays, high teas, functions, and celebrations. 


Financial management

  • Manages kitchen stock in a cost-effective manner by ensuring minimal waste throughout food preparation process.  

  • Ensures standing orders reflect current kitchen.

  • Conducts kitchen, pantry, and storeroom stock take monthly. 

  • Provides fortnightly orders of foodstuffs not included in standing orders.

  • On receipt of goods ensures they are checked against the packing. 

  • Ensures kitchen equipment is in a working order and good state of repair.

  • Communicates and interacts with others internally and externally in a professional manner. 

  • Maintains a positive, cheerful attitude about work and about life. 

  • Practices active listening by demonstrating the intention to hear and understand another person’s point of view.

  • Provides leadership and direction to kitchen and cleaning staff.

  • Ensures task lists are completed. 

  • Ensures additional tasks are completed as required and checks completion.

  • Utilizes and manages time effectively.

  • Is tactful and sensitive, particularly when discussing meal requirements with the frail elderly and/or their relatives.

  • Treats residents with courtesy and respect.

  • Has an even temperament able to work under pressure.

  • Is reliable and patient with a sense of humour.

  • Impeccable work ethic.

  • Current New Zealand safe food handling qualification(To be attained before or as soon as practicable after starting work).

  • A qualification relevant to the industry(Desirable).
