Trust Accountant and Accounts Manager
About the Role
Dawsons Lawyers is a busy, modern general practice with offices in East Tamaki and Kohimarama. We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Legal Trust Accountant and Accounts Manager to join our team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Trust Account Management
Manage all aspects of legal trust accounting in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations
Process trust receipts, payments, transfers, and journal entries
Perform daily and monthly trust reconciliations
Prepare and coordinate external trust account audits
Monitor and report trust account compliance issues
Maintain trust accounting records and supporting documentation
Process trust transactions
Ensure proper file authorisations and trust approvals
Manage IBD accounts
2. Business / Office Account Management
Manage firm operating accounts and banking
Oversee accounts payable and receivable
Manage payroll processing (or liaise with payroll provider)
Monitor cash flow and working capital
Prepare monthly management accounts
Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting
Coordinate GST, PAYE, and other statutory reporting
Liaise with external accountants and auditors
Oversee billing and debtor management
3. Reporting & Financial Oversight
Provide regular financial reports to the director
Monitor WIP, debtors, and cash flow
Identify financial risks and compliance issues
Assist in improving financial systems and processes
Support financial planning and firm strategy
4. Systems & Process Improvement
Maintain legal practice management and accounting systems
Improve internal controls and financial procedures
Develop financial policies and documentation
Train staff on trust compliance processes
5.AML Compliance
Provide administrative and operational support to the firm’s AML Compliance Officer in maintaining compliance with AML/CTF obligations.
Key Selection Criteria
Demonstrated experience in legal trust accounting
Strong knowledge of trust accounting rules and regulations
Experience working within a law firm or regulated professional services environment preferred
High level of attention to detail and compliance awareness
Strong reconciliation and reporting skills
Experience using Xero and OnePractice is preferable
Strong understanding of AML/CFT compliance requirements
High level of organisation and communication skills
