    Senior Engineering Role

Has potential, but needs a good shake-up.
The good thingsGood perks - fully remote, health insurance. Good pay. Stable. Good office. Internal mobility opportunities. There were a few kind and competent colleagues - before they got fed up and left.
The challengesLarge incompetent middle management class. Highly political with internal faction battles and back-scratching. Ratio of managers to people who execute is extremely high. Weak hiring and retention practices. Incompetence, loyalty and brown nosing is rewarded. People in very senior leadership roles who have either been there decades and are now part of the furniture (with no breadth of real world experience) or those who have talked their way in with no real skills to back it up. High staff turnover where good people leave and weak people stay, over time produces a culture that is allergic to talent. Many 'expert beginners' in senior roles. Toxic culture of narcissism and arrogance, talking down to staff etc. Unrealistic deadlines, endless pointless meetings. Low trust in senior engineers, micromanagement. Outdated engineering and delivery practices, waterfall etc. Trying to get AI to solve all their problems but it may be amplifying them because they lack the fundamentals.

A mixed experience; not the best choice for someone very aspirational.
The good thingsI had the opportunity to work under managers who were genuinely supportive, especially on the personal front. The organisation fostered an open and collaborative work culture, and the office environment itself was modern and well‑designed, making it a great place to work.
The challengesIt was very difficult to progress within Datacom, even after making several attempts. Opportunities for growth are limited, and when new roles become available, companies sometimes choose to hire externally rather than considering internal talent. This gave an impression that developing or training existing staff was not a priority, and that the organisation mainly relies on the skills employees bring with them rather than investing in their long‑term growth.

Happily experienced working with highly professionals in NZ's biggest, and top IT company
The good thingsI enjoyed working in coorporate, in a team. Made good friends. Learned what I was craving for. Got an amazing career guidance from different team leads. Enjoyed dinner parties and fun working environment.
The challengesDatacom is already well established. They have setup everything best for their employees. Once an employee understands the processes, everything looks very sorted, and kuddos to the management for such an amazing planning.

I enjoyed my time there and I wouldn't mind going back if there is an opportunity.
The good things- The culture & the people in my department & those I Interacted with were great. - Also loved the autonomy and flexibility that came with my role. - In a way - if you know how to work with people and you have a great manager then this is the place to be.
The challengesBeing pulled into poorly-defined projects - those without a manager, clear goals, or proper plans - often happens when there's a shortage of other work.

Stressful and exhausting to get the basics done - no investment in tools for client facing people
The good thingsSome nice people -too many have drink the cool aid
The challengesTerrible commercials with clients, siloed Managment service lines - projects under resourced, not client /staff focused just money and margins - front line get used and overworked -no back bone to methodology
