What's it like to be a Warehouse Assistant?
Warehouse Assistants work in warehouses at factories, and other manufacturing and logistics companies, to manage the flow of incoming and outgoing stock. They need to keep records, make sure that everything is kept in the right place, and prepare goods to be dispatched. Being a Warehouse Assistant often requires heavy lifting, and depending on the nature of the warehouse and its stock, the ability drive a forklift.
Tasks and duties
- Receiving, checking, recording, organising and storing stock as it is received.
- Taking inventories of stock and products, ensuring that they are safely and properly stored.
- Dispatching and loading goods out of the warehouse for delivery.
How to become a Warehouse Assistant
You don’t need formal qualifications to become a Warehouse Assistant as on-the-job training will be provided.
- 1.
Be prepared to take a drug and alcohol test as many warehouse and factory-based jobs require a clean test for safety reasons.
- 2.
Consider getting or updating your driver’s license. Some jobs will require a full car license, and for others it will be beneficial for to have a forklift endorsement on your license.
- 3.
Work your way up to a more senior position. Warehouse Assistant is a junior role but with experience you could gain more responsibility as a Warehouse Manager or Supervisor.
