What's it like to be a Social Worker?
A Social Worker (Kaimahi Toko i te Ora) helps people experiencing disadvantage to overcome issues and improve their quality of life by providing advice and support. They help individuals with decision-making and may also advise organisations, helping them to find fair solutions to issues. Social Workers work in many industries including aged care, health, child protection, disability services and education.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing clients’ needs and ensuring they have access to appropriate support services.
- Providing practical support, counselling, information and emotional support to clients.
- Acting as an advocate for clients in situations where they may be experiencing inequality, injustice or discrimination.
How to become a Social Worker
Becoming a Social Worker usually requires a qualification and relevant experience. You also need to register with the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB). In New Zealand, knowledge of Te Reo Māori and tikanga (Māori language and culture) is essential if you plan to specialise in working with Māori communities.

Complete an SWRB-approved qualification, such as the Bachelor of Social Work. This usually takes four years of full-time study.

Look for volunteer opportunities in your local community to get some experience.
- 3.
Register with the SWRB through one of the approved pathways to become a Registered Social Worker.

With several years of experience, you could specialise in youth justice, mental health, aged care, or working with Māori communities.
